2030 in A2L

In a close race for first the African Second League’s Southern Conference, Nampula (93-69) edged out Bulawayo (92-70). Just missing the cut were Lubango (89-73), Comoros (87-75), Eswatini (87-75), Luanda (86-76), and Lilongwe (85-77). The Pheasants finished first for the third time (2021, 2022), while the Buzz earned their first-ever conference finals trip.

Mbuji-Mayi (101-61) and Bangui (100-62) absolutely mauled the Central Conference competition. The Millionaires had never gotten to the conference final previously, while the Badgers had done it six times since A2L’s 2018 founding. Hargeisa was a very distant third at 86-76. The Green Eagles, along with the SC’s Eswatini and Reunion, notably became the first of the 2029 expansion teams to post a winning season.
Bulawayo earned the 4-2 road win over Nampula in the Southern Conference Championship, while Mbuji-Mayi outlasted Bangui in a 4-3 classic for the Central Conference crown. Both the Buzz and Millionaires secured their first-ever promotions to the African Association of Baseball’s First League.

The Second League Championship ended up being an all-timer, requiring all nine games with the finale going deep into extras. Mbuji-Mayi finally prevailed in the 17th inning for an 11-9 victory over Bulawayo in game nine.

Other notes: Bulawayo ace David Mapfumo set single-season records in the ultra-high scoring A2L for ERA (3.09), complete games (18), and innings (264). Mbuji-Mayi’s Said Juma Elmi set the single-season record for on-base percentage at .496. Kampala’s Leonard Kette set a bad record as he was caught stealing 67 times.
