Three-Team Deal Sends Matthews to Pittsburgh

Montreal Expos orchestrated a three team deal today that will shape the future of the
Pittsburgh Kings and
San José Killer Whales as well as their own future.
A centerpiece will be first baseman
Bill Matthews(29, .308-32-101 .904OPS 4.2WAR) who will make his way from
San José to
Pittsburgh with
Montreal and the
Killer Whales splitting the $21.8M left on his contract.
For
Montreal, they give up a depth piece in AAA RHSP
Chris Ball(24, 3*, 8-12 2.92 129K 2.3WAR) and a minor prospect in A RHSP
Oscar Gonzales(22, 2*, 4-2 2SV 3.01 56K 22G/9GS 0.0WAR).
The price for one year of
Matthews will be #15 prospect SS
Gabe Rivera(21, 1.5/3.5*, 2.7WAR between R and A ball) and R 2B
Alex Oyoque(20, 0.5/3*, .192-5-20 .480OPS 1.1WAR R), filling up their minor league system.
