DUNKLE STARS IN MEMORABLE QUEEN VILLAGE WIN
1B GOES 5/6 WITH 6 RBI AS 20 RUNS ARE NEEDED TO BEAT MINERVA

PHILADELPHIA (June 18, 1873) – East Philadelphia strugglers Minerva & Queen Village opened their series on Wednesday, and the result was an outstanding game at Fitzwater Field:

This contest was all over the place, and the runs started coming in right away with a 3-2 opening inning. The score 5-3 going into the bottom of the 4th, Queen Village scored eight runs on eight Hits, three Errors, and one Hit by Pitch. Minerva responded by scoring a dozen runs over their next two times to bat to take a 17-11 lead going into the bottom of the 6th.

In the bottom of the 6th Queen Village plated six runs to even the score, the key hit being a two-run Single by 1B Joseph Dunkle. Three more runs in the 7th gave Queen Village a 20-17 lead, and the 20th run, scored by Dunkle on a Single by 3B Joseph Barbati, proved to be all-important. Minerva scored twice in the top of the 8th but could score no more, and the hosts exited the game 20-19 winners.

Joseph Dunkle, already mentioned twice, was easily the Player of the Game:
B1: 1-run Single to LCF off J. Gray (R)
B3: Reached via Error by SS E. Grady
B4: 1-run Single past SS off J. Gray (R)
B5: Leadoff Single past 2B off W. McGuigan
B6: 2-run Single to RF off W. McGuigan (R)
B7: 2-run Double to LCF off A. Schumacher (R)
TOTAL: 5/6, 2B, 4 R, 6 RBI, 6 TB, 106 GMSC
Dunkle’s performance was the best of the season by a batsman in the PCBL. It raised his average from .291 (.626 OPS) to .326 (.703) OPS and his RBI total from thirteen to nineteen through 26 games of the inaugural PCBL season.

Both Minerva & Queen Village are 10-16, which leaves them tied for 6th place in East Philadelphia at nine games behind leaders Frankford Arsenal.
