SKAGGS CRACKS FIVE HITS AGAIN, THIS TIME IN WIN
MASS. BAY RIGHT FIELDER COMPLETES HIS 2ND FIVE-HIT GAME IN FIVE DAYS
BOSTON (July 19, 1873) – Massachusetts Bay is just a game in front of Alleghany for last place in the Colonial Conference, but they did not at all look like a struggling team against Niagara at Oceanside Park on Saturday:
This game was over early, as the hosts went ahead 7-0 by the end of the 2nd inning and never looked back, eventually beating Niagara by sixteen in what made for a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon.
2x All-Star 1B Albert Stoffers collected four hits and C Harry Thompson drove in five runs, but the man of the hour was leadoff man Franklin Skaggs:• B1: Leadoff Double to CF off C. Dempsey (R)
• B2: Leadoff Triple to LCF off C. Dempsey (R)
• B4: Leadoff Infield Single off C. Dempsey (SB, R)
• B5: Ground Out to SS
• B7: Leadoff Single past 2B off M. Hales (R)
• B7: Fly Out to RF
• B8: 1-run Single past 1B off W. Johannessen
• TOTAL: 5/7, 2B, 3B, 4 R, 1 RBI, SB Skaggs’ five-hit outburst was his second such outing in five days’ time, as he was 5/5 with three Runs in Mass. Bay’s week-opening loss at St. John’s.
Franklin Skaggs entered Week Eleven batting .294 (.683) but his recent performance has raised that figure to .314 (.730 OPS), and after having crossed the plate a dozen times so far this week Skaggs now has scored 65 runs through 65 games.
Massachusetts Bay is 28-37, alone in 5th place in the Colonial Conference. Niagara is 33-32, 3rd place and seven games behind leaders St. John’s.
