The Red Springs Red Robins scored a run in the first inning for the fourth-consecutive night - but couldn't hold a lead for the fourth consecutive night either, falling to the Whiteville Tobs 5-1 in their home debut.
Whiteville starting pitcher Dave Estrada quickly dampened the festive energy at Robbins Stadium -- with more than 5,000 in attendance -- settling in after that rocky first to stifle Red Springs the rest of the way.
Estrada scattered six hits over seven strong innings, allowing just the lone first-inning run while striking out five.
Red Springs (0–4) turned to an unexpected starter, J.D. Jones, after a late rotation shuffle. Jones held Whiteville in check through three innings but ran into trouble in the fourth. With two on and one out, Whiteville’s Tyler Winters crushed a Jones fastball over the left-field fence for a three-run homer, flipping a 1–0 Red Springs lead into a 3–1 deficit.
It was the decisive blow of the game, and a deflated hush fell over the home crowd as Winters rounded the bases. Jones was pulled after four innings, having surrendered three runs on five hits...
Game two of the series with Whiteville resumes Tuesday at Robbins Stadium.
