June 13-15, 2039: at Miami (3)
For a change the Rays lost 2 of 3 instead of winning 2 of 3 as they played a trio of close ones with the Marlins.
Moises Baca couldn't hold a 4-0 lead in the opener and the Rays dropped it 8-6 to Miami. Baca (4-4), who had been brilliant tossing 6 1-hit innings his last time out, was staked to the lead on a solo Jeremy Begley homer (#14) and Danny Arroyave's 2-run blast, but after mowing down the Marlins for 3 innings was ambushed in the 4th, giving up 5 runs and finishing 5 3 5 5 4 3 as his poor control led to loading the bases and giving up a grand slam. Begley had 4 hits in a losing cause as did Sergio Espinoza in his MLB debut as a hitter - the starter had been a two-way player in the minors and hit decently. He had four singles and an RBI in 5 at-bats.
Tampa Bay came from behind to take the middle game, scoring 3 times in the 8th to pull out a 4-3 win when John Lopez came off the bench and drilled a 3-run homer (#3). Lopez had been a candidate for demotion as he'd hit a disappointing 254/324/373 prior to his blast and that's primarily against LHP as a righty. Lopez's blow made a winner yet again in relief of Isaac Washington, now 7-1 and Walt Kelly handled the 9th for save #14. Sergio Espinoza, who did it with the bat the night before, used his arm to go an effective 6 3 3 3 2 5 with the final run against him scoring after he left.
The Rays blew leads of 2-0, 5-4, and 7-6 before ultimately succumbing 8-7 in 12 innings to Miami in the rubber game of the series. Danny Arevalo had his best game as an MLBer with a 2-run homer (#1) and RBI double and Jeremy Begley had another big day going 3-6 with a 2-run double but Tampa Bay's pitching let them down. And it was a letdown considering ace Danny Morales took the mound and was hit hard at 3.2 9 6 6 1 4. The pen did reasonably well afterwards although Omar Sears gave up the tying run in the 7th and Jon Coggin (1-2) surrendered the winner in the 12th.
Team record: 46-21, still 9 1/2 up in the AL East. Next up: A day off then 3 games in DC against the Nats, who are stumbling along at 33-34.
