2023 Week 3

Week 3: 4@ Philadelphia Grizzlies(5-4), 3vs Cincinnati Eagles(5-4)

April 10th

Philadelphia Beaten by Montreal, Miranda, 2-1

Starting pitcher Juan Miranda was a major factor in the 2-1 Montreal Expos triumph over the Philadelphia Grizzlies. He worked 5.2 innings of 6-hit, 1-run, 2 walk and 5K ball and got the win.

Picking up the save was fireballing right-hander Adam Rudolph. Philadelphia now is 5-5.

Dave Grochowski, who led the EL in on-base percentage with .416 last year, had a direct impact on the outcome. Grochowski contributed a run-scoring single in the top of the third inning to put Montreal up, 2-0. The 2022 batting champ is batting .316-0-4 .797OPS 0.0WAR in 10 games.

Grochowski called the win a testament to his team's "tenacity."

Dan Hinton(R, 1-1 4.38) - Ruben Torrez(L, 2-0 1.76) tomorrow. And again, the aces are lined up.

Hinton Schools Philadelphia in 6-1 Montreal Triumph

The Montreal Expos reigned over the Philadelphia Grizzlies in damp conditions.

The Philadelphia Grizzlies had their hands full with Montreal Expos starter Dan Hinton, who frustrated Philadelphia hitters while leading Montreal to a comfortable, 6-1 win. The win has Montreal at 6-5.

Though he did not get the decision, Hinton did all he could to keep his team close, twirling a shutout through 6.1 innings, until Montreal eventually rallied past the Grizzlies.

"We can always improve and get better, but we're feeling confident after that win," said Hinton.

Austin Roy(R, 0-2 6.35) - Jessie Dittus(R, 0-0 1.80) tomorrow. Effective but wild says the scouting report.

Grizzlies 11-3 Winners Versus Montreal

Philadelphia parlayed a decent outing from starter Jessie Dittus into a solid win over the Montreal Expos. The final score was 11-3. Dittus, now 1-0, was the winner. In 8 innings, he gave up 7 hits, while striking out 7, walking 0, and allowing 3 runs. The loss puts Montreal at 6-6.

Tony Munoz had a big 2-run home run for the Grizzlies in the bottom of the second inning. With Philadelphia trailing 3-2 and a runner on 1st, he sized up a fastball from Austin Roy, who led the WL in ERA with 2.98 in 2020, and punished it. The result was his 2nd home run of the season, which put the Grizzlies on top, 4-3. The 33-year old is batting .188-2-3 .610OPS -0.1WAR in 10 games.

Philadelphia manager Pat Pierce commended his team for "putting the hammer down."

The Philadelphia Grizzlies had to overcome a fine effort from Montreal pitcher Brett Asselin to win, 5-4, at Citizens Bank Park. Asselin went 7.1 innings and allowed 3 runs. The loss lowers the Montreal record to 6-7.

Calvin Victor was the walk-off hero for Philadelphia. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Grizzlies pinch hitter hit a dramatic run-scoring single to send the teams home.

Victor told a Philadelphia Bulletin reporter that he was "satisfied" with the win.

The Expos benefited from an error in the bottom of the fifth inning. Montreal was leading 2-1 when Robby Weltzer hit a 2-run single that was misplayed. It put Montreal in front, 4-1.

"Nice win for us," said Weltzer. "Now we'll go after the next one." He is batting .231-0-2 .593OPS 0.0WAR in 5 games.

With Montreal leading 1-0 and runners on 2nd and 3rd, he got a slider from 31-year old right-handed pitcher Kyle Stewart and swatted a double to right. It was his 1st double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Expos ahead, 3-0. The Canadian native is hitting .244-1-7 .610OPS 0.2WAR in 13 games.
