May 1st

Blue Jays Drop 4-1 Decision to Expos

Sam Griffin brought his A-game to help Montreal defeat the Toronto Blue Jays, 4-1. Adam Rudolph earned save number 7 this season. Toronto drops to 13-16.

Julian Hernandez had a big 3-run home run for the Expos in the bottom of the fourth inning. With Montreal leading 1-0 and runners on 2nd and 3rd, he got a fastball from Tim Jones and swatted a home run to right-center. It was his 6th home run of the season, and more importantly, it put the Expos ahead, 4-0.

"We take it day by day here," said Hernandez, "and today was a good one for us." Hernandez is batting .314-6-19 .864OPS 0.5WAR in 28 games his rookie year.

Paul Davis(R, 0-3 5.50) - Juan Miranda(R, 3-1 2.18) tomorrow. One day, he may become a good pitcher with his 3* rating… hopefully not tomorrow.

Davis, the winner, is now 1-3, after putting the clamps on the Montreal offense. In 8 innings of work, he gave up 1 run on 1 hit, while collecting 5 Ks.

"Getting ahead of the hitters was the key," said Davis. The 23-year old moved to 1-3 4.68 44K 0.6WAR in 7 starts in his third NMLB season.

Expos Win 10-3, Lose Hinton

The home crowd had a good time watching the Toronto Blue Jays and Montreal Expos get after it.

The Montreal Expos powered past the Toronto Blue Jays, 10-3, at Olympic Stadium. Matt Talbert provided some of the pop. He was 2 for 3 with a double and 2 walks. He scored 2 times and drove in 2. Toronto, with the loss, is 14-17.

Early in the game, designated hitter Joe Hawk had a grand slam home run for Montreal. It was his 3rd home run of the season and put the Expos on top, 4-0.

"It was a solid team effort," said Hawk after the game. However, the took a hard hit in the 2nd inning when starting pitcher Dan Hinton left the game with serious discomfort in his right arm. The diagnosis came swift and was devastating. He has suffered a partially torn labrum and will be out for 4 months.

Melvin Magana(R, 1-1 12.08) - Austin Roy(R, 1-3 5.14) tomorrow. Jep, it is THAT guy. He didn’t pitch at all in 2022 and now has a starting job… with THAT ERA.

Blue Jays Win in Ten

The Toronto Blue Jays did just enough to secure a victory over the Montreal Expos, 7-6, in 10 innings at Olympic Stadium. Nobody did more than first baseman Mario Lopez. The winner in relief was Jeff Martinelli. He is now 2-2. The left-hander allowed 3 runs on 3 hits in 2 innings. With the loss, Montreal sinks to 20-13.

Toronto needed the clutch hitting of Ricardo Orta to seal the deal. The right fielder swatted a solo home run in the top of the tenth inning to put the Blue Jays on top, 7-6. For the game, Orta had 1 home run and 2 singles in 5 at-bats.

"We took home the win," said Orta. "What's not to like?" The 2x Silver Slugger is batting .295-7-17 .941OPS 0.8WAR in 30 games.

Brett Asselin(L, 4-0 2.79) - Jose Mendez(L, 2-1 4.46) tomorrow. 15-game winner as a minor league free agent signee last season.

Expos Rally Late to Clip Vegas in Extra Innings

Kevin Cowden snagged the win in relief, but blew the save. He goes to 1-0 on the season. Noah Fletcher suffered the loss. The Gamblers have now dropped 5 straight.

Montreal used the timely hitting of Joe Hawk to seize the win. The pinch hitter stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the tenth inning to put the Expos on top, 9-8. It was his only hit in 1 at-bat, but it was a game-changer.

"Sometimes winning takes more than 27 outs," said Expos manager Aaron McCreery.
