Game 93: Oakland Athletics vs. Boston Red Sox
A dominant pitching performance by Oakland's Alex Wood provided the basis for the visiting Oakland Athletics (42-53) 8 to 1 victory over the Boston Red Sox (52-41).
Alex Wood (7-6) picked up the victory by limiting the opposition to just 1 earned run on 2 hits, 2 walks, and 1 wild pitch while striking out 8 in the 98-pitch complete game victory; Game Score 85. Leading the A's at the plate were JJ Bleday (3 for 5, Double, Homerun, Run, 3 RBI), Jacob Wilson (2 for 4, Triple, Run, RBI, Stolen Base), and Brent Rooker (1 for 5, Homerun, Run, RBI).
The struggles of Garrett Whitlock (4-7) continued, as he was tagged for 7 earned runs on 8 hits and 1 hit batsman while striking out 5 in 5 2/3 innings of work; Game Score 30. Of Note, I am frustrated with Whitlock and intend to find him a spot in the bullpen or trade away in the next few weeks. Kenley Jansen worked 2 1/3 innings in which he permitted 1 earned run on 3 hits while striking out 3. Jansen was ineffective in that he also permitted both of the runners he inherited to score. Liam Hendricks pitched a scoreless final inning to lower his ERA to 1.79 on the season. Rafael Devers (2 for 4, Homerun, Run, RBI) was the lone bright spot at the plate for Boston.
Player of the Game: Alex Wood
AL East Standings: 1st Place, 3 Game Lead
