June 29-30, 2039: vs Baltimore (2)

Tampa Bay swept its second straight two-game series on the road, handling the Orioles.

The Rays didn't get a hit until the sixth, and didn't score a run until the 8th when they put five of them on the board to come from behind and beat Baltimore 5-3 at Camden Yards. Danny Rivera beat out an infield single in the 6th to get that first safety and then Rivera drove in the first run with an RBI double in the 8th, setting the table for Justin Blackwell's 3-run homer (#8) to win it. Danny Rodriguez added a solo shot (#7) for insurance, and they made a winner of Ruben Cerrillo (6-5), who went 7 5 3 3 1 3. Walt Kelly loaded the bases in the 9th but got out of it for his 16th save.

Tampa Bay had an easier time of it in the second game, beating the O's 5-1 thanks a 4-run 4th inning and a dominant outing from Moises Baca. The 4th was highlighted by a 2-run John Lopez homer (#5) and a solo blast from Billy Doughty (#11) but the big story today was Baca. Last time out I described him as either "brilliant or brutal" after he was knocked around in his previous start and today he was the former, going 7 1 0 0 2 10 in a truly dominant performance. The only negative on the day was the continued struggles of veteran closer Eric Lewis, who pitched the 9th and gave up yet another homer (his 9th in 18 innings!) and put two more men on before finally getting through the inning.

Team record: 54-26. Next up: Home for 3 against the Yankees.
