Griffin Collects #8 in 9-2 Win over Oaks
The
Oakland Oaks went down to defeat to
Sam Griffin and his
Montreal teammates. The final score was 9-2, in favor of the
Expos. The Eastern League North East Division-leading
Expos have a record of 36-20.
Julian Hernandez had a big 3-run home run for the
Expos in the bottom of the third inning. With
Montreal leading 1-0 and runners on 1st and 2nd, he sized up a curveball from 27-year old right-handed pitcher
Jose Franco and punished it. The result was his 10th home run of the season, which put the
Expos on top, 4-0. He is batting .321-10-36 1.3WAR in 53 games.
Said losing manager Raul Quiles: "Give the
Expos credit. They played a better game than we did."

Expos Bag 4-2 Win
Montreal got a strong outing from
Marty Murrietta as the
Expos defeated the
Philadelphia Grizzlies, 4-2, at Olympic Stadium.
Murrietta picked up the win for
Montreal, going 7 innings. He gave up 2 runs on 4 hits. He now sports a record of 3-2.
Kevin Cowden collected his 6th save.
The Expos benefited from an error in the bottom of the second inning.
Montreal was leading 1-0 when
Ignacio Benavides hit a run-scoring single that was misplayed. It put
Montreal in front, 2-0. Hitting leadoff this year, the 26-year old is batting .270-5-28 .768OPS 8/11SB 0.9WAR in 56 games.
Montreal manager Aaron McCreery called it "a pretty good win."
The loss makes
Philadelphia 31-28.

The performance of
Fidel de Leon proved critical in helping
Philadelphia beat
Montreal, 8-2. The
Grizzlies second baseman was 3-5 with a home run and a double. He scored 2 times and drove in 2. The 2016 EL MvP is batting .314-17-33 1.008OPS 2.4WAR in 54 games.
Oscar Guzman, the winning pitcher, is now 4-3. He went 6 innings, allowing 2 runs on 7 hits, while fanning 7 and walking 1.
Jeff Mathias, credited with the save, is now 1 for 1 in save opportunities.
Philadelphia won the game in part because of
Pablo Vargas. The right fielder ripped a 2-run home run in the top of the sixth inning to put the
Grizzlies ahead, 4-2. For the game,
Vargas had 1 double and 1 home run in 4 at-bats.
"The boys were really swinging the bats today," winning manager Pat Pierce said.
With the win,
Philadelphia raised its record to 32-28.

Philadelphia, the first-place

Early in the game,
Hernandez had a bases-clearing double for
Montreal. It was his 17th double of the season and put the
