I want to clarify something in what you wrote. I had to follow the link and read the story before I realized "all the times the media kept bringing up about how bad he was with them" meant with the media, not with kids — you mentioned "saving a kid" in the previous sentence. My bad, but conditioned by recent sports figure scandals, I was afraid that is what you meant.
I'm glad to see that wasn't the case. Really, I blame no one for having a bad relationship with sports media people, some of whom are only one step above paparazzi. I couldn't take some of the nonsense, myself.
And so, as a result, Jim Rice was on the BBWAA ballot for all of 15 years, finally squeaking into the Hall of Fame in his final year of eligibility. The writers spared the HoF veterans committee from having to do the chore.
I had never heard about this before. Maybe if I was a BoSox fan, I would have. It deserves retelling. Thanks for sharing it.
