June 18-21, 2057: at Boston (4)

Game 1: Elijah Whitaker tossed 8 shutout innings and the bats came up big as the Rays bounced Boston 7-0 to open their series at Fenway Park. Whitaker (7-4) went 8 3 0 0 3 4 and was backed by Paul Mayes (2-5, triple, 3 RBI), Manny Flores (2-run homer, #10/12) and Angel Gonzales (3-5, double, 2 RBI).

Game 2: The Rays suffered with some lousy pitching as they fell to the Red Sox 10-5. Jorge Barraza (5-8) continued his up-and-down season by being down at 4.1 7 5 5 2 6 and the bullpen equaled that by giving up 5 runs of their own. Dave Gonzalez drove in a pair in a losing cause.

Game 3: Tampa Bay bounced back and shook off an abbreviated start by Dave Rose to pummel the Sox 13-3. Rose had to leave in the second after he retired the first five men he faced with a back tweak but will be fine for his next start. Meanwhile his mates picked him up - Angel Gonzales stayed red hot going 3-6 with a double and 3 RBI and Rodrigo Aponte had an RBI single and a 3-run homer (#5) to lead a 15-hit attack. Randy Mastropietro (6-1) picked up the win in relief.

Game 4
: The Rays took the series from Boston thanks to their third rout in four games, closing out the series with a 14-1 laugher. The Red Sox started their #1 pick (and #2 overall) of two weeks ago Luis San Inocencio right out of college and while he blanked the Rays over the first three innings things fell apart in the 4th when they scored 5 off him as his 35 control came home to roost with 3 walks in the inning. They then added 8 more runs over the next two innings to blow it open as light-hitting SS Alex Brown had a career game, going 4-5 with a triple, homer (#4) and 6 RBI while Henry Dominguez had an RBI single and a 3-run jack (#8). While all the hitting was going on Steve Swords (5-6) cruised at 6 5 1 1 2 7.

Team record: 48-28. Despite the fine showing at Fenway the Rays lost ground in the AL East as the Yankees stayed blazing hot, sweeping a 3-game series and cutting Tampa Bay's division lead to 2 1/2. Next up: Back home for 3 against Toronto.
