2051 Regular Season Review
The Royals matched the team of 2046 with an 122-40 season, losing on the last day to miss out on a new record. One year on from Colin Stewart’s departure and there is no change in the regular season dominance enjoyed by the Royals as they extend their streak of consecutive division titles to 16, moving ahead of the Yankees for total division titles and trailing only the Dodgers and the Braves.
There was little change in the top of the standings from the All Star Break, with five of the six division winners having led at the All Star Break. The one exception was the NL West, where the Padres were overtaken by both the Diamondbacks and the Dodgers but still holding on to take the final wild card.
The wildcards were taken by the Rays, the Guardians, and the Twins in the AL, highlighting the strength of the Central division while the Mets joined the Dodgers and the Padres in the NL.
Pitching Triple Crown
Few men in league history have won the pitching triple crown. Braden Montalbano of the Kansas City Royals joined this elite company today when the season ended, officially making him the league leader in ERA, K's and wins.
Montalbano put up a 20-3 record, an ERA of 2.92 and 235 strikeouts this season. He started 34 times, walked 59 and held opposing clubs to a .214 average.
Montalbano is the odds-on favorite to capture the Cy Young Award this year.
Batting Titles
Ernesto Chairez of the Tampa Bay Rays capped a fine season by winning the American League batting crown.
He outpaced all others with his .323 average. For the season, the Rays right fielder played in 158 games, collected 195 hits, 33 home runs, scored 93 times, and knocked in 103 runs.
Ernesto Buenrostro was at the head of the class in the National League this year.
The standout Padres center fielder posted a .343 average to capture the batting crown.
Buenrostro went to the plate 571 times and collected 196 hits, including 58 doubles, 4 triples and 13 home runs. This season's batting leader also drove in 91 runs, scored 85 times and played in 149 games.
