July 18-19, 2039: at NY Yankees (2)
The Rays forgot to pack their bats for the trip to New York, losing both games to the Yankees while scoring a grand total of three runs and seeing their division lead drop to single-digits (9 games).
Danny Morales tasted defeat for the first time in 2039 as the Rays fell 5-1 to New York in the opener. He was touched for a couple of unearned runs in the 1st and then another pair in the 4th to drop to 10-1 and finish the day 5.1 8 4 2 0 5. Justin Blackwell's solo homer (#12) in the 5th was all the offense could manage.
I guess the bullpen is going to remain a problem no matter who we bring in as the Rays lost the second game when newly-reacquired Devon Williams gave up a walk-off homer in the bottom of the 9th to let the Yankees sweep the 2-game series with a 3-2 win. Before that though the story of the game was another anemic offensive performance from Rays hitters, who were no-hit for 6 1/3 innings by New York's Malik Brim before Danny Perez went yard (#23) to break it up and Justin Blackwell followed with a homer (#13) for the second straight day to tie it up. Moises Baca went 5 5 2 2 3 3, allowing back-to-back solo homers in the 3rd as all 5 runs scored in the game came from bases-empty blasts, with the one off Williams in his second inning of work (he only needed 7 pitches to get through the 8th) the winner.
Team record: 61-34. Next up: Another two-game quickie series, this one at home against Boston.
