Cards news: May 19 -- Deal sends 1B/OF Gurriel to Houston for RH closer Bednar

The other day, St. Louis Cardinals OF/IB/DH Lourdes Gurriel Jr. complained about not being a starter.
Today, he got his answer with a trade to the Houston Astros for right-handed relief pitcher David Bednar.
Acquired in the off-season to be a designated hitter against left-handed pitchers and a bat off the bench, Gurriel didn't seem to like that role and it showed in his performance.
In 21 games/15 starts, Gurriel hit .237 with four home runs and 12 RBIs.
The Cardinals are hoping the 32-year-old Bednar can help stabilize what has been a shaky bullpen.
In 17 games for Houston this season, he has gone 1-4 with nine saves and a 2.55 ERA.
Bednar, who has 160 career saves since breaking into the majors with the Padres in 2019, will be a free agent at season's end.
