END OF JULY
Trade Deadline Ends with Three Minor Deals in Montreal
stadiumreport.bbn July 31st, 2023
While they were pretty much set to stand pat, K.C. Martin and the
Montreal Expos front office never shy away from a good trade and pulled the trigger on three transactions that could make them better in the long run.
Being blocked in the majors by a glut of infielders, AAA 2B
Kyle Oldham(24, 2.5*, .285-3-31 .734OPS 1.9WAR AAA) was traded in a three team deal that will see LHRP
Juan Ospina(27, 3.5*, 7-3 1SV 2.33 56K 1.7WAR) move from
Pittsburgh to
Chicago with
Montreal eating the rest of the salary.
Also going through the door was AAA RHSP
John Martinez(25, 2.5*, 3-6 4.39 69K 1.0WAR AAA) who had a brief stint with the Major League team in 2021 with a 7.18ERA but never break through again. He will be going to the
Philadelphia Grizzlies.
The return on those two deals?
Chicago gave up young R LF
Jose Rivera(19, 1/3* HS, 1/4* OSA, .373-10-32 1.140OPS 0.7WAR R) and
Grizzlies R 1B
Jose Velasquez(18, 3.5* HS, 2.5* OSA, .354-2-13 0.1WAR R). Both are unranked prospects.
There was not much of a seller’s market this year and so we only did some minor deals. We last minute tried to find a taker for Santiago Rodriguez but there was nothing that really came together. Offers were a bunch of first baseman/DH or bad catchers. Oh and for Ospina, we had no use for ANOTHER strong lefty.
Around the league, there have been a lot of AAAA players changing hands, and some strugging 3* guys, but there was no big blockbuster.
