Pre-Arbitration Extensions & Trades
The offseason started with Bobby Daniels formally retiring and the Giants formally voiding Juan Minnelli’s final year contract at the cost of $3.8m. Minnelli’s departure means there are only three contracts left from when Stewart arrived – Cason Willard, Chris Foley, and Andy Frederick. Willard and Foley are two players on the block this offseason, which would leave the Giants with almost complete financial flexibility.
Two of the RP that the Giants waived, Alex Shockley and Lane Mouland, were picked up by the Blue Jays and Red Sox respectively.
Pre arbitration also saw two trades as David Balderas, Great Glove winner but clubhouse disruptor, was traded to the Yankees for a prospect infielder, Guadalipe Barajas. This is a clear indication of the Giants rebuilding status. The second trade saw the Giants claim some return for the expiring contract of Juan Bernal, picking up a younger replacement in SS Danny Ralls.

International Amateurs
We just completed our monthly private practice with many young international amateur free agents who we hope can aid our club in the coming years. It was great to meet the players in-person and get to know them better, and I was able to improve my scouting assessment on all invitees.
None of the players exceeded my previous expectations.
However, a few invitees left me disappointed as they did not appear to match my previous assessment, although they may still end up being future stars:
Jorge Sordelli, 17 year-old CF out of Venezuela
Lean and athletic, Jorge Sordelli hails from Caucagüita, Venezuela. He has the potential to slam 25 homers a season. He needs to improve his pitch selection and understand game situations and counts to be anything more than an average contact hitter. He will never be known for his speed, but is an average runner. Sordelli can be a second division starter at center fielder.
Daniel Montoya, 16 year-old SS out of Venezuela
Daniel Montoya is a long, lean athletic shortstop who was born in Caracas, Venezuela. He makes good contact which should translate to a .250 batting average. He should be able to provide above average defense as a shortstop. He runs the bases with speed and smarts. Montoya could be an above average shortstop someday.
