August 7th

Montreal Tacks 8-7 Loss on Memphis

The Montreal Expos beat the Memphis Bolts, 8-7, at Olympic Stadium. The win was due in part to designated hitter Matt Talbert, who was 2 for 4 with a home run, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 2.

"I'm just looking for a good pitch that I can hit well," said Talbert. "And not try to do too much." Celebrating his birthday today, he is batting .274-20-58 .826OPS 1.2WAR in 106 games.

Brett Asselin, the winner, improved to 14-4. He held Memphis to 5 runs on 6 hits over 8 innings, while racking up 7 strikeouts. Paul Ide notched his 8th save in 8 chances.

Montreal shortstop Rich Meilleur helped the Expos go up, 5-4, in the bottom of the sixth inning. With the game tied, Meilleur hit a run-scoring single off Memphis pitcher Matt Bow.

By defeating Memphis, the first-place Expos improved to 71-41.

Bolts Hammer Griffin, Montreal, 8-1

Memphis third baseman Fernando Guerrero played a vital role in his team's 8-1 conquest of Montreal. He was 2 for 3 with a home run, a double, and a walk. He scored 2 times for Memphis. Memphis reliever Michael Brown picked up the win, upping his record to 5-4. Sam Griffin was saddled with the loss. The loss makes Montreal 72-42.

Memphis used a clutch at-bat from Aaron Levine to capture the win. The center fielder hammered a 3-run home run in the top of the second inning to put the Bolts ahead, 4-0. It was his lone hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a humdinger. The 3rd overall pick in 2019 is batting .286-9-44 .788OPS 1.9WAR in 101 games.

"We didn't pitch good, and when you don't pitch good, you lose," said Montreal manager Aaron McCreery.
