Cards news: July 23 -- Trade sends RHP Anthony Bender to Tampa Bay for pitching prospect
The St. Louis Cardinals have acquired minor-league right-handed pitcher Wyatt Lunsford-Shenkman from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for right-handed relief pitcher Anthony Bender.
Lunsford-Shenkman, 24, has pitched as a reliever in the rookie league this season for the Rays.
In 10 games, he has gone 2-2 with one save and a 3.38 ERA.
Acquired by the Cardinals mid-way through the 2025 season, Bender enjoyed success for a season and a half before bottoming out this season.
Bender went 4-7 with 30 saves with a 2.37 in 71 games after coming to St. Louis.
Penciled to be the team's closer this season, a job he quickly lost, Bender struggled.
In 39 games, he is 1-4 with five saves, four blown saves and a 5.40 ERA.
The 32-year-old's status as a free agent at season's end also played into the deal.
