Cards news: July 31 -- IF/OF Donovan and RHP Bednar go to Detroit in four-player deal

The St. Louis Cardinals have acquired minor-league right-handed pitcher Carter Holton and infielder Hao-Yu Lee in exchange for infielder-outfielder Brendan Donovan and closer David Bednar.
The left-handed Holton has spent this season with the Tigers' rookie league team where in 10 starts he has gone 3-1 with a 3.09 ERA.
He was originally drafted by Atlanta in the second round of the 2024 draft before later being traded to Detroit.
In 44 career minor-league starts, he is 9-15 with a 3.33 ERA.
The 24-year-old Lee has split this season between AA Erie and AAA Toledo.
In 68 games/66 starts, he has hit .254 with 11 home runs and 48 RBIs.
Lee has played in 598/588 minor league games since 2021, during which he has hit .286 with 22 home runs and 84 RBIs.
At 47-67, the Cardinals are undoubtedly out of contention for a playoff spot so the trades of Donovan and Bednar both made sense since both will be free agents at season's end.
Breaking into the majors in 2022, Donovan, 30, has had a nice career with the Cardinals.
In 689 games, 631 starts, he has hit .268 with 57 home runs and 288 RBIs and a .753 OPS.
The 2027 season has not been his best as he's checked in at .236 with six home runs and 29 RBIs in 73 games/70 starts.
St. Louis acquired Bednar before the bottom fell out on its playoff chances.
He pitched well in his limited time, going 1-1 with seven saves and a 1.00 ERA in 18 games.
