Cards news: Sept. 1 -- Player moves on roster expansion day
With rosters expanding by two players for the final month-plus of the season, the St. Louis Cardinals have made a series of moves.
Shortstop Masyn Winn, who is due to come off the injured list Sept. 2, will return to the major league roster while left-handed reliever Alex Cornwell will go onto the injured list after suffering an elbow injury in a 5-3 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on August 31.
Also infielder J.J. Wetherholt will be returned to AAA Memphis.
Being recalled from Memphis are right-handed pitcher Joey Estes, left-handed pitcher Cooper Hjerpe and outfielder Chris Newell.
Coming off an elbow injury, Winn, 25, has hit .253 with five home runs and 47 RBIs for the Cardinals this season in 111 games/105 starts.
Wetherholt, 24, got his first call up to the majors following Winn's injury.
In 12 starts at shortstop, he hit .233 with two home runs and eight RBIs.
Cromwell, 28, has split time between AAA and the majors this season.
In 31 relief appearances with the Cardinals he has gone 1-1 with one save and a 3.59 ERA.
Estes and Hjerpe have both pitched at Memphis and in St. Louis this season.
Both were starters when with the Cardinals, but will be part of the bullpen upon their return.
Estes, 125, made 12 starts for St. Louis going 2-6 with a 4.76 ERA.
At AAA, he has gone 6-7 with a 4.82 ERA in 15 starts.
The 26-year-old Hjerpe made four starts in the majors and gone 0-2 with a 6.75 ERA.
In 23 starts for the Redbirds, Hjerpe has gone 8-9 with a 3.79 ERA.
Newell, 26, open the season with the Cardinals before struggles sent him back to AAA.
That opened the door for Jose Ramos to become the full-time center fielder. His recent success prevented Newell an opportunity to return.
In 62 games/57 starts with St. Louis, Newell, 26, has hit .224 with 12 home runs and 24 RBIs.
He is hitting .289 with 19 home runs and 52 RBIs in 54 games/53 starts at Memphis.
