You ever make a trade, then shortly after start thinking "well, that was dumb."?
This, for me, is one of those trades.
Here's the logic ...
1. After a couple of relief meltdowns by Musgrove, I was ready to demote him to 3A and recall SP Brayan Bello to take his place in the pitching staff.
2. Musgrove is a FA at the end of the season, and a veteran .... not the type of player that a team demotes typically.
3. So, I "shopped" him, and there predictably wasn't much to offer in return for 4 months of a rental player, not having a good season.
4. The one piece I did see that was interesting at the time was Paul Goldschmidt, a StL favorite.
5. I was hoping to gain an increase in leadership and fan interest (neither happened).
6. Tommy White, the homer or nothing, 1B callup has actually been pretty decent. I expected him to just be a bunch of K's and a couple of HR .... but he's performed better than that. Goldschmidt was viewed as "1B/DH insurance" (not that great insurance, I concede).
7. Both Musgrove and Goldy are FA at the end of the season, so one under performing rental for another.
I guess, in the end, the trade is alright, and likely realistic. Georgia has been a good trade partner, and Hodge and now Musgrove start in their rotation, with Hodge being their highest rated SP.
IF Christian Moore is ready to return from the IL, but production from Ornelas and White have relegated Moore to 3A.
