Rockies Finish Road Set With Marlins
After losing the first game of the series 4-3 to end the month of April, the Rockies completed the three game set to start May.
Game 2: Marlins Edge Rockies in Pitcher's Duel
Saturday's contest was a low-scoring affair that saw the Marlins come out on top. Pitching dominated for both sides, with the Rockies' Dwight Gooden delivering a strong performance, but taking a tough-luck loss. The deciding blow came in the bottom of the seventh, when Florida's Ken Caminiti hit a sacrifice fly off Gooden to break a 3-3 tie. Gooden's line (L, 2-3) was 7.1 innings pitched, allowing 7 hits and 4 earned runs while striking out 7. The Rockies' offense, though scrappy, couldn't quite put it all together, leaving seven men on base. Luis Alicea and Shawon Dunston each had two hits, but it wasn't enough to secure the victory.
Game 3: Blauser's Heroics Save the Day
With the series on the line and the Rockies staring down a sweep, the team rallied for a dramatic come-from-behind victory on Sunday. The game was a back-and-forth battle that saw the lead change hands multiple times. It was Jeff Blauser who proved to be the hero, delivering a clutch 4-RBI performance, including a game-changing double in the top of the ninth that gave the Rockies a 6-5 lead. Blauser, who also hit a triple and a home run in the game, was on fire at the plate. Catcher Sandy Alomar, Jr. also had a big day with three hits and two doubles. The bullpen was key in this win as Kevin Ritz (W, 3-0) and Jack Armstrong (SV, 1) shut down the Marlins' late rally.
"Mile High Mike" O'Connell Weighs In: A Month into the Season
"Alright, alright, settle down folks! It's your man, 'Mile High Mike,' and you're listing to the Denver Sports Report! Now, I gotta be honest, I'm a little shocked. We're a month into this thing, a month and half maybe, and our boys are sitting at 13-12. An expansion team, a month in, and they're playing .500 baseball. Who saw that coming, huh? Don't lie, I know you were all expecting a lot worse. I was!
"I'll tell you what, that trip to Miami, it showed me something. They lost the first two, yeah, but in that last game? Down late, and who steps up? Blauser! The kid comes through with a double, a triple, and a dinger. That's the kind of grit you can't buy folks. That's the kind of heart that tells me this team isn't going to roll over.
"I still got my eyes on Thorne and Rhodes. The kid GM and the skipper. They're making it works so far. They're not panicking. They're playing small ball when they have to , and they're getting big hits form guys we're counting on. The bats are better than I thought they'd be, especially the way they can put pressure on the defense. Now, the pitching...that's a how other can of worms, especially with our tough luck. Dwight Gooden deserved a better fate in that second game, but that's baseball.
"Look, it's a long season. We're not in the World Series hunt, let's not get carried away. But for right now? For a brand new team? They're competing. And that's all I'm asking for. I'll believe it when I see a winning record in September, but I'm not complaining about what I'm seeing today. We're on the map, folks. We're on the map. We'll be back after this break!"
