Rockies Navigate Road Trip into July: Streak Snapped, But Inconsistency Lingers

After a brutal 12-game homestand that saw our Rockies go winless, the team hit the road again, embarking on a six-game swing that took them to San Francisco and Atlanta. While the overall results were a mixed bag, the most crucial outcome, was finally snapping the agonizing 14-game losing streak! The Rockies finished this road trip even at 3-3 bringing their overall season mark after July 1 to 33-45

San Francisco Giants Series (1-2)
Game 1: Giants 6 Rockies 5 (10 Innings)

The losing streak extended to 14 games in a heartbreaking extra-inning loss in game one. Despite a valiant effort, including a home run from Jeff Blauser and a late rally, Will Clark's big day (4-for-6, HR, 2 2B, 3 RBI) for the Giants, capped by a walk-off single from Darrin Jackson, sealed the Rockies fate. Manager Dusty Rhodes aptly stated, "We just can't get over the hump." This game also saw a bench-clearing brawl involving Armando Reynoso and Candy Maldanado.

Game 2: Rockies 13 Giants 10
FINALLY! THE STREAK IS OVER!
The Rockies exploded offensively to break their 14-game losing skid in a wild, high-scoring affair. Sandy Alomar, Jr. was the star, going 3-for-5 with four RBI and three runs scored. Luis Alicea also homered, and the team collected 15 hits. Jack Armstrong earned the win in relief, helping the Rockies end their losing streak and breathe a collective sigh of relief.

Game 3: Giants 2 Rockies 1
The Rockies couldn't build on their momentum, falling in another tight contest. Dwight Gooden delivered a strong performance, pitching a complete game and allowing just two runs on seven hits. However the offense couldn't muster enough support, with the Giants getting a walk-off RBI single from Tony Graffanino in the ninth. B.J. Surhoff had two hits and drove in the Rockies lone run.

Atlanta Braves Series (2-1)
Game 1 Braves 10 Rockies 2

The series opener was a tough one, as the Braves' offense, led by David Justice's two home runs and three RBI, proved too much. Mike Bielecki pitched effectively for Atlanta. Torey Lovullo had three hits and an RBI for the Rockies, but it was a lopsided loss.

Game 2: Rockies 4 Braves 2
The Rockies bounced back with a solid win. Gil Heredia pitched 6.2 strong innings, allowing just one run on seven hits for his fourth win of the season. Shawon Dunston provided the offensive heroics smashing a 2-run home run in the fifth inning to give the Rockies the lead. Kevin Ritz earned his 10th save of the season.

Game 3: Rockies 6 Braves 4 (14 Innings)
The Rockies finished the road trip with an epic, marathon victory in the series finale to begin the month of July. This 14-inning battle saw Shawon Dunston emerge and the undeniable hero, hitting two home runs, including a game-winning 2-run blast in the top of the 14th inning! Jeff Blauser also homered and had a big double. Paul Abbott picked up the win in relief after multiple bullpen arms were used in the extended game. This hard-fought victory showed immense resilience from the Rockies.

"Mile High Mike" O'Connell on the Road Trip:

"Alright, folks, 'Mile High Mike' here, and I'm not gonna lie, I needed a stiff drink after that last homestand. But we're back in the win column! That 14-game losing streak? GONE! Snapped it in San Francisco, and it felt like a weight lifted off the whole team. Sandy Alomar, Jr. and that offense finally broke through!

"Then we go to Atlanta, and yeah, we got thumped in the first game, but we bounced back! Gil Heredia looked good and then that 14-inning classic?! Are you kidding me?! Shawon Dunston, you magnificent man! Two bombs, including the game winner in the 14th! That's the kind of fight I want to see from our Rockies! We went 3-3 on this trip isn't world-beating, but after what we just went through, it feels like a championship! We're still learning, still growing, but we showed some guts on this trip. That's what I'm talking about!"
