Rockies Break Spring Training

Rockies Conclude Spring Training: Thorne & Company Have Decision to Make

The spring training season for the Colorado Rockies has officially wrapped up, and it was a busy one! Over the past several weeks, General Manager Caleb Thorne, Manager Dusty Rhodes, and their staff evaluated 50 players to determine the best 25 for their Opening Day roster. The team concluded its exhibition schedule with a 12-18 record, a period focused more on assessment and chemistry building than wins and losses.

Batting Stats: A Mix of Promise and Struggle
The Rockies' offense showed flashes of brilliance and areas for improvement.
--Ozzie Guillen hit a sterling .405 and had an OPS of 1.016 over 37 at bats during 25 games.
--B.J. Surhoff hit .342 and had an OPS of .869
--Sandy Alomar Jr. hit .340 and had an OPS of .930 with 2 homers and 8 RBI
--Lance Johnson hit .327 with an OPS of .769
--The Freshman Phenom Alex Rodriguez held his own in batting .287 with 3 homers and 8 RBI
--The Sophomore Scott Rolen also hit 3 homers while hitting .224.

Pitching Stats: Arms Tested, Decision to be Made
The pitching staff faced the challenges of evaluation, and several arms stepped up:
--Steve Cooke went 1-0 with 1 save and a 0.77 ERA over 11.2 innings
--Dave Burba went 0-0 with 1 save and a 0.84 ERA over 10.2 innings
--David Weathers went 0-0 with a 1.04 ERA over 8.2 innings
--Mark Gardner went 1-0 with a 1.35 ERA over 13.1 innings
--Greg McMichael went 0-0 with 2 saves and a 2.13 ERA over 12.2 innings
--Gil Heredia went 2-0 with a 2.12 ERA over 24.2 innings
--Sterling Hitchcock is recovering from Tommy John surgery went 0-0 with a 3.86 ERA over 4.2 innings.
--Melido Perez, the big free agent acquisition struggled going 1-2 with a 7.78 ERA over 19.2 innings
--Armando Reynoso, the surprise of the rotation from the inaugural season also struggles going 1-2 with a 7.71 ERA over 16.1 innings.
--Darryl Kile also struggled going 1-4 with a 7.47 ERA over 15.2 innings.

The team utilized a large number of pitchers to assess their readiness, so we'll see what things transpire for the front office as they try to select the top 10-12 pitchers for the staff.

Roster Decisions Loom
With 50 players vying for 25 spots, Caleb Thorne and Dusty Rhodes have some incredibly tough choices ahead. The performance in spring training has undoubtedly influenced these decisions, blending statistical output with player potential and fit within the team's overall strategy.
