Surprise: We poached the last usable player from the Kansas City Royals in 2022 in Gabriel Cervantes.
That means, lots of buyers, no real sellers. So, we made some phone calls and got a lot of rejections… just like my Tinder experience. The only trades we were able to the… close to finish line status so far were with two division rivals…
Boston Aeros SS Tim Kessler(26, 3.5*) is an option. The 2022 EL Gold Glover was the 4th overall selection in 2018 and is just a little step back behind Meilleur defensively while being a 55/45/50/40/50 hitter. His 2023: .266-17-60 .727OPS 1.4WAR in 117 games, a 91OPS+. Comparison, Meilleur was hitting for a 99OPS+ with better defense… The catch… Kessler had a .281-17-65 ,741OPS 5.6WAR year in 2022 and we could be buying low.
The cost: Rodriguez and Meilleur… sending a potential 4* prospect and the direct replacement to a division rival…
The second potential deal: Toronto Blue Jays RHCL Manny Ayala(26, 4*) A groundball pitcher with a changeup and a dynamite cutter, he throws this cutter in the high 90’s and has reached triple digits when amped up. His 2023: 8-8 26SV 3.82 82K 2.6WAR… the catch: he had FIP’s of 2.81, 3.28 and 2.57 in his first three seasons.
The cost: Ian Messer, A SP Mike Faddis(21, 1.5/3*, 10th round 2021), AAA LHCL Alex Guzman(24, 3*), AAA RF Roberto Pedraza(26, 2.5*)
Problem: Guzman is a strong lefty that is not even on the 40-man and could be an option in our pen or first lefty in case of injury in AAA and Mike Faddis’ stock has risen lately and I don’t want to trade guy who may be in the progress of figuring something big out.
… We may just wait till after free agents file for another try… neither trade feels right.
