"Mile High Mike" Post All-Star Break Blues at Home
"Mile High Mike" O'Connell: "Alright, alright, Denver, welcome back to the Mile High Sports Report. And let me tell ya, the All-Star break feels like a lifetime ago doesn't it? We were talking about Berrroa and Listach heading to the Midsummer Classic, dreaming about a strong second half. Well, the dream's hit a little turbulence here at Mile High, folks. A little too much turbulence if you ask me.
We just wrapped up a ten-game homestand, and if you're keeping score at home, it wasn't pretty. We dropped three out of four to the Cardinals, then lost two of three to the Cubs, and to top it off, we couldn't even manage to win the series against our expansion buddies, the Marlins, losing two out of three to them too. That's a 3-7 record out of the break in our own back yard! UGH!
I'm trying to figure it out, folks. We was flashes of what this team can do before the break, that grit, that fight. But coming home, it's like we left our bats on vacation.
Against the Cardinals we saw some decent moments from guys like Pat Listach, and Jerry Browne, even B.J. Surhoff with some timely hitting. But it wasn't enough. We saw Melido Perez have a rough outing, and the bullpen, well, they've been taxed. You get two runs in one game, four in another. You can't win like that! And when guys like Chuck Carr and Gerald Perry are carving us up, you know something's not right.
Then the Cubs come to town. We got that one win thanks to a good outing from Perez, where he said he 'tried to mix it up,' and Torey Lovullo with a clutch triple. But Sammy Sosa was hitting dingers all over the place, and we just couldn't contain their offense in those loses. Jacob Brumfield hit a homer, but it feels like we're just playing catch-up every night.
It's frustrating! We're not getting consistently good pitching, and when we do, the bats go quiet. Or the defense falters. Its' always something. This August, man, it's already got that 'swoon' feeling hanging over it like last season, and we're not even their yet! Dusty Rhodes said, 'It's go to translate into win.' He's right! The energy has to translate!
What now? Look I get it. This is a team in their second year of existence. There are growing pain. But they've shown they can win games. These games are at home. This is where you're supposed to feed off the Mile High crowd! We need to find some consistency, and fast. The schedule doesn't get any easier, and we can't afford to let this early second-half slump define us.
I'm still a believer, but I'm telling you, the faithful up here are getting a little restless. We need to turn this around, starting now."
