It's just weird that the MLB has garaunteed contracts and the NFL doesn't when NFL s the more contact heavy sport. Maybe that's actually part of it, there's more of a risk to the owners of injury, but if I were the players union rep I would bring up that there is significant risk to the players too, especially with concussions.
