It's not a contract to perform at a certain level, it's a contract for services. You can't ask somebody for a multi-year commitment and then only YOU get the opt-out. (Except for how the NFLPA sucks, I mean.)
Bad enough that the athletes get "drafted" to the plantation, I mean "team", of the owners' choosing, rather than being free to negotiate their employment with an employer that they choose, as everyone here is free to do. Now they're supposed to stay locked in even if they outperform their expectations, but one minor injury or poor spell and it's all "Ha-ha! We lied! Take a hike, sucker!"??
