Kings Hand Montreal 6-3 Opening Day Loss

The Pittsburgh Kings started the 2024 season win an impressive 6-3 win against the Montreal Expos at PMC Park. Victor Alvarez, who finished 3rd in the EL in strikeouts with 211 in 2022, led the way for Pittsburgh.

"Victor did a good job of managing their lineup," said Pittsburgh manager Randy Sandlin. Alfonso Siordia earned his 1st save, after closing out the game.

Pittsburgh designated hitter Bill Matthews contributed a timely at-bat in the bottom of the first. With two down, he hit a sinker to left-center field for a 2-run single. It was his 1st hit of the season and put the Kings ahead, 3-0. The 3x All-Star hit .269-22-67 .768OPS 0.7WAR in 2023.

Dominant Performance by Miller in Pittsburgh Win

In a tight contest between the Pittsburgh Kings and the Montreal Expos, Steve Miller was the determining factor. The Pittsburgh right-hander sparkled in his team's 1-0 win. Alfonso Siordia closed it out for Pittsburgh, earning his 2nd save. Montreal is 0-2 after the defeat.

Miller, the Pittsburgh right-hander, went 8 innings, allowing no runs on 3 hits. He collected 9 strikeouts.

"I went after the hitters," said Miller. "No pussyfooting around." The 23-year old was the 15th overall pick in 2019.

Expos Suffer One-Run Loss at Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh Kings right-hander Jonathan Holder pitched a good game against the Montreal Expos at PMC Park, leading his team to victory, 4-3. Alfonso Siordia closed the game out for Pittsburgh, earning his 3rd save. The win puts Pittsburgh at 3-0.

The Kings got a big at-bat from left fielder Danny Roman. For the game, Roman was 1-4 with a home run, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once. In the bottom of the sixth, with runners on 1st and 2nd, he stroked a 3-run home run. His 1st home run of the season gave Pittsburgh a 3-0 lead. The 2019 EL Silver Slugger is coming off a .273-16-60 .747OPS 1.0WAR year.

"Jonathan showed what he's made of," said Pittsburgh manager Randy Sandlin.

Expos Collect First Win, 4-1, at Pittsburgh

Montreal Expos starter Marty Murrietta hurled his team past the Pittsburgh Kings, 4-1. He worked eight innings of 6-hit and 1-run ball, walking one and striking out 2.

With the loss, Pittsburgh is 3-1.

Montreal used the hitting of Ian Messer to pick up the win. The right fielder clubbed a solo home run in the top of the third inning to put the Expos on top, 1-0. For the game, Messer had 1 home run and 1 single in 4 at-bats.

"Nice win for us," said Messer. "Now we'll go after the next one." The reigning AL Silver Slugger is coming off a .317-13-63 .822OPS 3.4WAR year.
