Nobody took the ball from the kid, who barely knew what was happening. Dad ran to get the ball, swiped the ball, ran back and deposited it with his kid, got called out, and gave it back. To quote you, "she never touched the ball" when the kid was holding it.

There was nothing to give back. It wasn't hers! She had no claim to it, especially since she never touched it.

If Dad had gone to the concession stands, popped open the cash drawer while the attendant was serving the line, and swiped $500 from the till, then scooted back to his seat and gave the cash to the kid, would he be allowed to keep the money just because "I did it for my boy! It's his birthday…sometime this month…"?

Your comparison would hold weight, if the Dad had stolen a ball owned by the lady. She didn't own the ball. She never bought the ball.. She didn't even make an attempt to catch the ball. She tried to get out of the way of the ball.

For your comparison to fit, you would have to say a $500 bundle of ones was thrown randomly out of a car window, the woman ducked out of the way, the dad happened to be at the edge of the road & grabbed it as the lady was bending down intending to give it to his son & when she complained, he gave it to her. The money was never in any one's possession until the dad got to it. There is no indication it was meant for the lady. She just went Karen & let her sense of entitlement lie to her about the $ being hers.
