Whenever a player signs a contract, it has to be because he agreed to play for that guaranteed money. Not having any expectations of getting the rest.
When a team asks a player to renegotiate the final year, they're telling him he's not good enough to make that amount. But if they are good enough, that final year gets incorporated into an extension.
