September 14-16, 2057: at Toronto (3)

Game 1: The Rays are your AL East champs halfway through September thanks to a 4-2 win at Rogers Centre over the Jays, which was also their 12th straight victory. Eljiah Whitaker had to leave after two batters with a minor back tweak so it turned into a bullpen day and they got a combined 7 innings of 1-run ball from Danny McMullan (3-0) and Erik Witten with Devin Tadlock finishing up for save #27. Jesus Avalos doubled and drove in a pair, Joel Bland (#24) and Ryan Rivera (#5/13) had solo homers, and Angel Gonzales banged out four more hits.

Game 2: Despite emptying the bench after the previous night's celebrations the Rays still managed a 4-1 triumph over Toronto, extending their win streak to a baker's dozen. Steve Swords (11-10) was excellent at 6 3 0 0 2 4 and Jake Cid closed it out with his 13th save. Jalen Diaz was the star on offense today as he once again produced when given the chance to play, going 3-4 with a 2-run homer (#4) and backup CF Brian Whittaker hit his 3rd longball of the season.

Game 3: Tampa Bay completed the sweep with another low-scoring win over the Jays, taking their 14th consecutive victory by a 3-1 score. Tony Guzman (8-4) was a dominating 5.1 3 1 1 1 8 and Devin Tadlock recorded save #28. Rodrigo Aponte had a solo homer (#17) and Jesus Avalos a key RBI single to provide just enough offense.

Team record: 103-47. Next up: 3 games in Houston.

Durham update: The Bulls are through to the championship round of the IL playoffs after an 11-2 win over Scranton WB to sweep that series by a combined score of 26-7 over three games. They're still awaiting the conclusion of the Pawtucket-Columbus series to see who they'll play.
