September 21-23, 2057: vs Baltimore (3)
Game 1: Dantel Chinchilla drove in 3 runs to lead the Rays to a 5-3 win over the Orioles in the series opener at Publix Park. The second-sacker had the game's big hit, a 2-run triple in a 3-run 6th which overturned a 3-2 Baltimore lead. Angel Gonzales continued to lay waste to opposing pitching with his 37th homer and 119th RBI of the season earlier. Victor Boria (8-0) vultured the win from Steve Swords (who went 5 5 1 1 2 4) after allowing 2 runs in the top of the 6th to lose a 2-1 lead, and Devin Tadlock pitched around an error and some traffic of his own to pick up his 29th save.
Game 2: Tampa Bay ran out the reserves and it showed as they only could manage a pair of runs in a 3-2 loss to the Orioles. Still Tony Guzman (8-5) had a 2-0 lead before, as so often has happened with him on the bound, the big inning got to him as he gave up a run and left with two men on, which Erik Witten allowed to score leaving Guzman with a 5.1 5 3 3 2 6 line.
September 23: Activated P Randy Mastropietro from his rehab assignment at AAA Durham, optioned P Danny McMullan to Durham. Sent 2B Aaron White to Durham on a rehab assignment.
We would have left Mastropietro down there but his 30 days were up and he'll be left off the playoff roster. It'll be good to get White back for the playoffs especially as Alex Brown and Jayden Woodard have stopped hitting.
Game 3: Jorge Barraza continued his amazing run as he and Joe Rose combined on a 7-0, 6-hit shutout of the Orioles in the regular season home finale. Barraza (17-10) went 7 5 0 0 2 4 and has now thrown 28 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings and he's lowered his ERA from 3.54 to 3.04 just in the month of September, no mean feat for a guy with 183 IP on the season. The bats were held to five hits but two of them accounted for all seven runs: Ryan Rivera's 3-run homer (#7/15) in the 3rd and a grand slam from - who else? - Angel Gonzales (#38) in the 5th. Gonzales is now hitting 332/416/596 with 123 RBI and has a real shot at MVP. The Rays finished their home schedule 58-23.
Team record: 106-50. Next up: 3 games in Boston.
MLB Playoff Races: The Rays and Minnesota are AL division winners and the Yankees and White Sox will play in the Wild Card Game, but the AL West is wide open with the Angels 1/2 game up on Texas and one game on Houston but it's win the division or stay home for those three. In the NL it's somewhat similar except it's the third wild card up for grabs. Philly, Pittsburgh and the Dodgers will win their divisions and the Rockies are 6 up in the first wild card but Indianapolis and Arizona are tied for WC2 with Columbus only a game behind and Atlanta 1 1/2.
Durham Update: The Bulls put themselves of the precipice of elimination by losing Game 3 in Columbus 5-2 but dramatically evened up the series with a 1-0 win in 15(!) innings. Making that game all the more remarkable is that 35-year-old Brad Mabe went 10.1 3 0 0 5 6 and threw 138 pitches and then Phil Weststrom went the final 4 2/3 allowing only 1 hit so they combined for a 15-inning, 4-hit shutout with elimination a run away. The decisive Game 5 is in Durham in a couple of days.
