MLB news: Sept. 29 -- Padres and D'backs clinch playoff berths; NL West title still up for grabs
With a 3-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks, the San Diego Padres moved into a first-place tie in the National League West Division with two games left against each other in the regular season.
After that outcome, both teams learned that they will be part of the National League postseason.
One as a division champ and the other as a wild card.
The Padres (86-74) are going to the postseason for the first time since 2026.
Their last World Series appearance came in 1998, when they fell to the New York Yankees.
This will be the fifth consecutive postseason trip for the D'backs, who have advanced as NL West champs three times in the past four seasons.
Arizona reached the World Series in 2023, only to lose to the Texas Rangers.
The D'backs lone World Series win came in 2001, when they defeated the New York Yankees in seven games.
