Mid-Month Snapshot
We’re now two and a half months into the regular season. Here are a couple of items that caught my eye:
December 16 – The Hespeler Stars hosted a 4-game set against the Cambria Cannons and took 3 of 4. After dropping the first game, 7-6 in 11 innings, the Stars came back in game 2, trouncing the Cannons, 9-0. RF
Kai Faulkner was responsible for
7 of those runs. The 26-year old went 2 for 4, 2 R with both hits coming in the form of home runs. With Hespeler leading 1-0 in the bottom of the 4th, Faulkner connected on a 1-1 fastball from LHP Derek Willday for a 1-out Grand Slam home run. Two innings later, Faulkner ended Willday’s afternoon when he smashed a 1-out, 3-run shot into the rightfield bleachers to make the score 8-0. Hespeler would tack on another run when CF Cedric Bristow led off the bottom of the 7th with a first-pitch solo home run off RHP Ray Lambright. The United Leagues record for RBI in a game is 9, accomplished three times. The most recent coming off the bat of Kingston’s RF Mo Spenceley back in October 1951.
December 17 – The Wellington Athletics went into Queensland and took 2 of 3 from the Eagles. In the second game, the Athletics’ offense erupted for 23 hits in a 13-10 shoot-out victory. Three Athletics collected 5 hits apiece. While No. 3 hitter, LF
Matthew Floyd, went
5 for 6 with 1-2B, 1 RBI, 4 R and No. 5 hitter, C
Declan Bugbie, went
5 for 5 with 1 BB, 4 RBI and 1 R, it was No. 4 hitter, RF-CF
Wan-hua Gu, who really had a big day. The 23-year old Taiwanese Gu went
5 for 6 with 2 HR, 2-2B, 5 RBI and 4 R. Gu singled in the first, hit a two-run home run off RHP Keven Jones in the 3rd, doubled in the 5th, hit a two-run homer off RHP Nicky Sherlock in the 6th and hit an RBI double in the 7th before striking out in the 9th.
