Cards news: April 8 -- IF/OF Rafaela out with strained hamstring; Melendez called up from AAA
The St. Louis Cardinals have placed IF/OF Ceddanne Rafaela on the 10-day injured list after he suffered a strained hamstring during a 4-3 win at Atlanta on April 3.
Rafaela, 29, had hit .222 with no homer or RBIs in the first five games of the season.
He is expected to miss up to eight weeks.
Getting called up from AAA Memphis is 22-year-old middle-infielder Gusatavo Melendez.
In nine games/eight starts with the Redbirds, he has hit .429 with three RBIs.
He played five games in the majors in 2029, hitting .182 with no homer or RBIs.
At AAA last season, he hit .277 with 10 home runs and 61 RBIs in 138 games/134 starts.
The Cardinals have sent outfielder Brando Mayea to AAA Memphis and called up William Hill.
Mayea, 24, has hit just .040 through the first seven games of the season with one RBI was the team's starting center fielder much of last season.
The 23-year-old Hill has hit .438 in four games for the Redbirds this season with one home run and three RBIs.
A year ago, while splitting time at Low-A Palm Beach, High-A Peoria, AA Springfield and AAA Memphis, Hill hit a combined .271 with 11 home runs and 43 RBIs.
