December 31, 1958 - Snapshot
We are at the midway point of the season!
Here are few highlights that caught my attention over the past two weeks:
December 23 – The Queensland Eagles arrived in Downie for a three-game set against the Chiefs and took the first game, 5-3. 32-year old 1B
Rod Dennis (.300/.383/.518, 16 HR, 60 RBI, 43 BB, 2.5 WAR) was the player of the game, going
5 for 5 with 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 R. Dennis singled in the 1st, hit a 2-run home run off LHP Lucas Franklin in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, hit an RBI single in the 6th and singled in the 9th. 26-year old SS Noel Eissens (.222/249/.276, 2 HR, 24 RBI, 9 BB, -0.6 WAR) also hit a 2-run home run earlier in the 6th inning that gave the Eagles the lead for good.

December 26 – The Queensland Eagles next headed to Brunswick for a three-game series against the Legends. The first game was played under cool and drizzly conditions, but 33-year old RHP
Logan Belsey (10-7, 3.46 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, 3.21 FIP, 107 ERA+) was unfazed, going the distance in a 4-0 victory, pitching a
2-hit shutout. Belsey went 9.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 7 K, 112 PI, GS: 88. Belsey gave up just two singles to LF Carl Patton in the 1st and 1B Jay Mitchell in the 7th. 28-year old CF Matsuo Oyama (.249/.330/.456, 11 HR, 32 RBI, 25 BB, 1.3 WAR) led the way offensively for the Eagles, connecting on two, two-out solo home runs in the 2nd and 7th innings respectively.
-----------
December 26 – The Stratford Barons pulled into Embro for a 3-game series and received a rude welcoming in game one, getting pummeled, 10-1. 28-year old
Bill Spaeth (.322/.373/.573, 13 HR, 44 RBI, 17 BB, 1.7 WAR) led the way offensively. The Suns right fielder belted
three home runs, while adding 7 RBI and scoring three runs. Spaeth hit a two-out, two-run home run in the 1st, a one-out, three-run homer in the 3rd inning and finally a one-out, two-run home run in the 5th, all against a hapless LHP Robin Wadsworth. It’s the 24th time in United Leagues’ history that three home runs have been hit in a single game and Spaeth becomes the 23rd player to accomplish it. He is the first player for the Embro Suns to hit three home runs in a game since IF Kian Meadmore did it back on February 1, 1942.
-----------
December 30 – The Brunswick Legends dropped the second game of a three game series against the Cobourg Redlegs, 10-3. But 3B
Jorge Arredondo (.233/.315/.304, 3 HR, 20 RBI, 37 BB, 7 SB, 0.2 WAR) received a standing ovation from the hometown crowd just the same. He went 1 for 3 in the game, but that lone hit represented his
2500th hit of his career. Arrendondo singled with one out in the bottom of the first against LHP Axel Mackay, the first hit of the game for the Legends. The 37-year old Cuban becomes just the 5th player in United Leagues’ history to collect 2500 hits. The Redlegs led the game 4-1 until they broke it wide open with a 6-run 7th inning. After Cobourg plated two runs, 28-year old C Yoshiake Ikeda (.240/.304/.376, 7 HR, 30 RBI, 20 BB, 1.2 WAR) stepped up with the bases loaded and crushed a 3-1 offering from LHP Won-suk Ko for a Grand Slam home run to put things out of reach.
-----------
December 31 – The Legends got some revenge against the Redlegs in the final game of the series and on the final calendar day of the year. 22-year old sophomore LHP
Randy Goodwin (6-9, 4.42 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, 3.74 FIP, 88 ERA+) went toe-to-toe against Cobourg’s ace, LHP Bill Budd, and fashioned a sterling
2-hit shutout as Brunswick won, 5-0. Goodwin’s line on the afternoon was 9.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 125 PI, GS: 86. Helping Goodwin’s cause was 30-year old SS Harris Yaag, who went 2 for 4 with 1 HR, 1-2B, 1 RBI, 2 R.
