Cards news: August 16 -- SS Melendez lost thumb injury; top prospect Perez called up from AAA
The St. Louis Cardinals have learned that shortstop Gustavo Melendez could miss up to five weeks after a hit by pitch resulted in a fractured thumb during a 5-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on August 13.
Melendez, 22, has had a impressive rookie season hitting .265 with 11 home runs, 58 RBIs and 52 runs scored in 95 games/91 starts.
While he has not had a great season at AAA Memphis, hitting just .220 with 16 home runs and 54 RBIs in 111 games, Perez has long been considered one of the top prospects in MLB.
With Melendez out, and the Cardinals owning a 6.5-game lead in the NL Central the team considered this would be a good time to give the 21-year-old a run in the majors.
