PIONEER HAS FIVE THREE-HIT MEN IN LAKE ERIE ROMP
BOWMAN, CRAIG, MARCEL, McKENZIE, & STEELE EXCEL WITH BAT AS VISITORS WIN BY 18

ERIE, PENN. (May 18, 1877) - Pioneer B.C. entered Friday’s game at Lake Erie having won six of their first seven games in 1877. That hot start continued in a thorough beating of their hosts at the Tenth Street Grounds:

The visitors had full control of this game straight from the first pitch, bombing their way to a lead that was 12-0 after two innings and 17-3 after the end of four. As a result, Pioneer improved to 7-1 while Lake Erie fell to 5-3.

Five of Pioneer’s nine starters had 3+ Hits on the afternoon:
PIO #1 Grover McKenzie (CF): 3/5, 2 R, 2 RBI, SB
PIO #2 George Bowman (LF): 3/6 (3B, 5 TB), 3 R, 6 RBI, SB
PIO #4 Jonathan Steele (C): 3/7 (3B, 5 TB), 3 R, 2 RBI
PIO #5 Callum Craig (RF): 4/7 (2 2B, 3B, 8 TB), 4 R, 3 RBI
PIO #6 Louis Marcel (SS): 5/7 (2B, 6 TB), 2 R, 4 RBI
Even Pioneer pitcher Fred Cowan, a .147 hitter last year (163 PA), was able to join in on the fun:
PIO P Fred Cowan BAT: 2/6, 3 R, 3 RBI, 1 BB
PIO P Fred Cowan PIT: CG WIN (4-1, 0.83 ERA), 12 HA, 0 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
Lake Erie had a pair of three-hit men of their own in defeat…
LE #2 Harold Orsini (SS): 3/6 (2B, 4 TB), 1 R, 1 RBI
LE #3 Joe Mitchell (1B): 3/6 (2B, 4 TB), 1 R, 2 RBI
…but a terrible outing by Sondre Larsen (1.2 IP, 10 HA, 12 RA/4 ER) and buffoonish defense (15 E) meant Lake Erie never had a chance to earn a home win against visiting Pioneer.
