MLB news: Sept. 12 -- Detroit is first team to secure a playoff berth
Owners of the best record in baseball, the Detroit Tigers not surprisingly became the first team to clinch a playoff berth with a 6-1 victory over the Minnesota Twins.
At 92-55, the Tigers lead the Twins, who happen to own the second-best record in MLB, by 2.5 games in the American League Central Division with 15 games remaining in the regular season.
The third best record in the AL belongs to the West Division-leading Seattle Mariners (84-62).
The Miami Marlins top the National League list with an 83-63 to sit atop the East Division.
The Tigers made the World Series a year ago, only to fall to the Colorado Rockies.
Detroit has not won a World Series since 1984, when it downed the San Diego Padres.
