For example, I’ve seen some tournaments where there is a “salary cap” = average PT rating of your active roster. Does a “too high” team salary at some point result in a negative performance penalty or nerf your team on the field?

Did you check the chemistry ratings of the added new teammates vis a vis current teammates? That can affect overall team performance. The players you added for example may be prima donnas which subtracts from team performance.
