2037 BSA Bolivar League

Defending Copa Sudamerica winner Ciudad Guayana was the top squad most of the year in the Bolivar League. They had the best record at the all-star break at 63-33 and finished at 102-60 to repeat as Venezuela Division champs. The Giants scored the most runs in Beisbol Sudamerica at 911. They actually outperformed their expected win/loss by 12 games, thanks to a 28-12 record in one-run games and 12-3 mark in extra innings. Valencia was second in Venezuela at 93-69, which was good for the first wild card. The Velocity picked up their fourth playoff berth in five years.
The remaining two divisions and wild card slot had seven different teams realistically in the fight. For the fourth time in five years, Quito won the Colombia-Ecuador division at 93-69, bouncing back after a shocking 66-win 2036. The Thunderbolts were two games ahead of Bogota and five better than Medellin in the division. Last year’s division champ Bucaramanga was a non-factor at 75-87.
The Peru-Bolivia Division had a tie at the top between Trujillo and Arequipa, both 92-70 after 162 games. La Paz was 90-72 and Lima finished 85-77. Both the Thoroughbreds and Arrows clinched playoff spots. Bogota (91-71), La Paz, and Medellin (88-74) were the first teams out in the wild card hunt. For the Lobos, they saw a 10-year playoff streak snapped and underperformed their expected win/loss by seven games, going 20-33 in one-run games.
Since seeding in BSA didn’t differentiate between division champs and wild cards, Trujillo and Arequipa were guaranteed to be the #4 and #5 seeds regardless of their tiebreaker game. However, both wanted the division crown and home field advantage in the wild card round. The Thoroughbreds dominated 12-2 to take it, finishing the season on a four-game win streak while the Arrows lost their final three games. It was repeat division crowns for Trujillo and the eighth berth in nine years for Arequipa. The Thoroughbreds allowed the fewest runs in BSA at 543 and had the BSA’s best run differential at +127.

Quito 1B Patton Tadeo was the unanimous Bolivar League MVP as he posted BSA’s 14th Triple Crown season for a batter. In only his second year starting, the 26-year old Ecuadoran led in runs (142), hits (243), home runs (68), RBI (157), average (.380), slugging (.764), OPS (1.182), wRC+ (220), and WAR (11.9). Tadeo’s 142 runs were the second-most in BSA history behind only Paco Amorim’s 147 from 2034.
Tadeo’s homers and RBI both ranked as the ninth-best in BSA, his slugging was eighth, OPS was 17th, and WAR was 16th by a position player. He was a first round pick out of high school in 2030 for the Thunderbolts and saw only 61 total games until becoming a starter in 2036.
Pitcher of the Year was also unanimous for Trujillo’s Sercinio Etnel in his seventh season. The 28-year old righty from Suriname led in wins (22-6), ERA (2.30), quality starts (27), FIP- (65), and WAR (7.6). Etnel struck out 225 in 270 innings with a 181 ERA+. He was a fourth round draft pick in 2030 for the Thoroughbreds and certainly has exceeded all expectations

Trujillo had won the tiebreaker game over Arequipa and opened with a 9-3 first round win. However, the Arrows rallied with a 10-6 and 5-4 win to advance, getting the go-ahead run in the ninth of the finale. Arequipa took game two 9-2 against Ciudad Guayana, but the reigning champs took the opener 3-2 and the latter games 12-4 and 6-5 to advance. Game four was a 14-inning marathon which finally had a breakthrough in the top half as the Giants’ Jonathan Gonzalez snuck a solo homer by the right field pole.
Quito opened their series with a 7-5 win over Valencia, but the Velocity prevailed after that on 6-3, 5-1, and 3-2 wins. This set up a rematch in the Bolivar League Championship Series between the two Venezuelan contenders. Like the prior year, Ciudad Guayana had home field advantage. They had been competitive in the regular season though with the Giants narrowly winning the season series 7-6.
Valencia went ahead in the ninth on a solo Norbertino Caban home run for a 5-4 road upset in game one. Ciudad Guayana had a five-run fifth inning en route to a 5-3 game two victory. The Velocity took game three at home 3-1 thanks to a three-hit complete game win by Luis Molina. Benedito Garay gave up one run in seven innings for game four, a Valencia 5-1 victory.
Ciudad Guayana survived 6-5 in game five, forcing the series back to their home diamond. But Valencia’s strong pitching prevailed again with a complete game win from two-way star Jorge Fred. The Velocity took the finale 7-2 and the series in six for their second pennant in five years, dethroning the reigning champ Giants. Valencia became ten-time Bolivar League champs (1974-78, 2007, 11, 21, 33, 37). The 3B Caban was series MVP going 9-21 with one homer and four RBI.
