April 15-18, 2058: at Toronto (4)
Game 1: Dave Rose had an off-day and a first-inning 3-0 Rays lead disappeared quickly as they fell to Toronto 6-4 in the opener. Rodrigo Aponte's 2-run double was the key hit in that inning but Rose (1-2) gave up a run in the bottom of the frame and then 3 more in the 2nd on his way to finishing 4 8 5 5 1 6.
Game 2: The good news: Tampa Bay easily handled Toronto 7-1 in the second game. The bad news: The team lost the red-hot Henry Dominguez for a month thanks to a torn quadriceps. H-Dom was hitting 397/453/647 in the early going and had already earned 1.2 WAR. As for the game Tony Guzman (2-1) was outstanding again at 6 3 1 1 2 3 and the offense was spread out amongst the lineup with Rodrigo Aponte leading the way after going 2-4 with 2 RBI.
April 17: Placed OF Henry Dominguez on the 10-day IL, recalled OF Jalen Diaz from AAA Durham.
Diaz will platoon with Brian Whittaker in Dominguez's place with Jesus Avalos shifting to center against righties with Diaz in RF while Whittaker will play CF against lefties. Diaz of course excelled with the big club last season in limited late-season action.
Game 3: Another win, another starting OF lost for a month. This time it was Joel Bland, who had just started heating up after a miserable start to the season, who went down with a fractured rib. Bland missed about a month last year as well but still earned 6.6 WAR - it'll now be tough for him to replicate that considering his poor start. Meanwhile the team got a 9th-inning solo homer from Dantel Chinchilla, his first of the year, to pull out a 6-5 win over the Jays. Orlando Diaz came off the bench in the 7th to deliver a 2-run shot (#4) which put them up 5-4 before Devin Tadlock lost that lead in the 7th. Elijah Whitaker started and suffered again with his control, going 5 4 3 3 6 4 and now has issued 16 free passes in 21 IP. Jake Cid (2-1) picked up the win with Bill Sutherland nabbing save #5.
April 18: Placed OF Joel Bland on the 10-day IL and recalled OF Jordan Sailes from AAA Durham.
Sailes was one of the young MLB-ready guys we acquired in the offseason who were stuck behind regulars, so he gets a shot with Bland out to start in LF with his 65 power.
Game 4: The Rays managed to win the series by taking the final game and somehow they didn't lose an OF in the process as they topped Toronto 5-2. Victor Boria (4-0) has been perfect in his four starts and today went 6 3 2 2 1 7 with the only two runs against him scoring after he left with two men on to start the 7th. Bill Sutherland saved again (#6). Angel Gonzales had a solo homer (#5) to put them on the board in the 1st and Rodrigo Aponte capped a big series with a 2-run homer (#2) which made it 5-0. Jordan Sailes was 2-4 in his Rays debut.
Team record: 13-6, moving within 1/2 game of the division-leading Yankees. Next up: Off to Oakland for 3 games.
