2037 Copa Sudamerica
The 107th Copa Sudamerica began in the Brazilian capital on a 4-3 Bearcats win. Valencia got all of their runs in the top of the ninth, but couldn’t complete the rally. The Velocity kept that momentum going with a 4-1 win in game two, with all of the game’s runs in the final two frames. As the series shifted to Venezuela, Valencia had a 5-0 game three triumph on Benedito Garay’s three-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts.
It was all Velocity after that with 8-5 and 8-2 home wins to secure the Cup in five games. Valencia became five-time South American champs (1977, 1978, 2011, 2021, 2037) and were 5-5 in the finals, while Brasilia fell to 4-3. In his second season for the Velocity, veteran LF Ismael Pimentel was series MVP going 11-18 with four RBI. He had signed after a decade with Manaus which included the 2026 league MVP. Pimentel would opt out of his five-year deal though and opt for free agency for 2038.

Other notes: Otavio Furtado retired after 20 seasons with Santiago, posting a 4.22 ERA, 10-16 record, and 2.3 WAR over 232.2 innings to close his career. His 199 strikeouts got him to 5036 Ks, becoming the 9th in the 5K club for Beisbol Sudamerica. He’s one of only 46 in world history with 5000 or more strikeouts. Furtado also finished with a 324-187 record, 3.21 ERA, 4848.2 innings, 225 complete games, 49 shutouts, 115 ERA+, 79 FIP-, and 116.1 WAR.
Furtado retired 4th on the BSA wins list and 22nd among all pitchers ever. For BSA, he finishes 4th in innings, 6th in complete games, and 10th in pitching WAR. He also ranks 34th among all pitchers for total innings. Furtado is one of the stronger pitchers to never win Pitcher of the Year, although he was a five-time finalist. He’s BSA all-time playoff leader for wins (20-10), innings (287.1), starts (38), and hits allowed (289). Furtado had a 3.16 playoff ERA with 273 strikeouts, 116 ERA+, 85 FIP-, and 6.2 WAR.
In hitting milestones, Paco Amorim became the 9th member of the 700 home run club. He was now on the cusp of other major marks after his 19th season with Arequipa with 3395 hits, 1991 runs, 737 homers, 1917 RBI, and 1597 walks. Amorim is now up to 25th in world history for walks drawn and is the BSA all-time leader. Amorim also posted 9.3 WAR in his age 37 season, giving him 147.3 for his career. He now ranks 5th among BSA position players, 9th among all BSA players, and 58th on the world leaderboard among all pros.
