April 19-21, 2058: at Oakland (3)
Game 1: The first five Rays to bat in the opener at Oakland all reached based and scored, capped by Jordan Sailes' first MLB homer, a 3-run shot. Unfortunately though Julio Mattila gave up 3-run homers in the 2nd and 3rd and the offense couldn't score again so the Rays took an unlikely 6-5 loss. Mattila (1-1) couldn't stand prosperity, although to his credit he hung in there to keep the game close finishing 6.1 3 6 6 3 6.
Game 2: Dave Rose pitched his best game of the young season and the Rays got back in the win column with a 4-1 triumph over the A's. Rose (2-2) was outstanding at 6.1 5 1 0 1 4 and Bill Sutherland closed for the 7th time this year. The offense came primarily off the bat of Angel Gonzales, who had an RBI single in the top of the first and then belted a 2-run homer (#6) in the 5th.
Game 3: Tampa Bay dropped the rubber game in another tough one, falling 3-2 to Oakland. Tony Guzman (2-2) gave them a quality start at 6 5 3 3 2 8 but the offense was limited in this one with the highlight being Manny Flores' first homer of the year, a solo shot in the 6th which briefly tied the game at 2.
Team record: 14-8. Fortunately the Yankees also dropped 2 of 3 so the Rays remain 1/2 game behind New York. Next up: home for 3 against the Angels.
