Arrow Game 147: Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees

Yankees Stun Red Sox with Explosive Eighth-Inning Outburst

New York, NY — A tense rivalry matchup at Yankee Stadium turned into a late-inning runaway Thursday night, as the New York Yankees erupted for five runs in the bottom of the eighth to defeat the Boston Red Sox, 7–2, behind a masterful complete-game performance from Gerrit Cole. Having solid command from the outset, Cole (12-8) carved through Boston’s lineup with 10 strikeouts and scattering 10 hits across nine innings of work; Game Score 68. The Yankees’ ace walked just one batter and allowed only two earned runs, earning his 12th win of the season and Player of the Game honors. His only blemish came early, when Boston shortstop Marcelo Mayer launched a solo homer in the first inning.

Boston carried a 2–2 tie into the late innings, but the game swung dramatically in the eighth. Yankees rookie catcher Austin Wells delivered the decisive blow, clubbing his second home run of the night, a two-run shot off Nick Pivetta that capped the five-run frame. Wells, who also homered in the fifth, finished with three hits, three RBI, and eight total bases in a breakout performance. Earlier in the inning, Aaron Judge ignited the rally with his 46th home run of the season—an early no-doubt blast to left that immediately gave New York a 3–2 lead. Moments later, DJ LeMahieu followed with a triple, driving in another run before scoring on Wells’ blast. LeMahieu went 2-for-2 with two RBI, a triple, and a sacrifice fly.

Boston starter Tanner Houck (16-9) pitched well for seven innings, racking up nine strikeouts and allowing just four runs; Game Score 58. But the Yankees’ eighth-inning surge off Pivetta put the game out of reach. Pivetta recorded only two outs while giving up three hits and three runs, as well as allowing the inherited runner to score. Boston mustered opportunities throughout the night—collecting 10 hits—but struggled to convert, leaving six runners on base. Rafael Devers drove in the club’s only other run with a third-inning RBI, while Triston Casas added three hits, including a ninth-inning double.

With the win, the Yankees improved to 86–61, while the Red Sox fell to 81–66, losing ground in the playoff race.
