Cards news: July 18 -- SP Eric Segura acquired from Indians for RP Russell and AAA pitcher Sparks
The St. Louis Cardinals have acquired right-handed starting pitcher Eric Segura from the Cleveland Indians in exchange for right-handed relief pitcher A.J. Russell and AAA right-hander Nolan Sparks.
Segura, 26, has gone 7-3 in 19 starts this season with a 3.92 ERA.
He broke into the majors in 2029 and in 83 starts over the past three seasons has gone 29-26 with a 4.59 ERA.
St. Louis acquired the 27-year-old Russell in an off-season trade with the New York Yankees, and thus far his 2031 season has been a disappointment.
In 33 games, Russell has gone 3-1 with a 6.44 ERA.
He wasn't much better at AAA Memphis, where in six games he was 1-0 with four saves and a 6.00 ERA.
A 13th-round draft pick in 2024, Sparks has been part of the rotation at AAA Memphis this season.
During that time, he has made 19 starts and gone 6-5 with a 4.63 ERA.
The 28-year-old got eight starts with the Cardinals in 2030 but was 2-5 with a 7.32 ERA.
