Cards news: July 26 -- SP Corbin Burnes dealt to Boston for RHP Alec Baker
The St. Louis Cardinals have acquired right-handed relief pitcher Alec Baker from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for right-handed starting pitcher Corbin Burnes.
The 31-year-old Baker has served as the Red Sox this season, going 2-4 with 23 saves and a 2.81 ERA in 34 games.
Last season, he topped the American League with 46 saves for Boston.
Baker broke into the majors in 2026 with the Arizona Diamondbacks before joining the Red Sox a year ago.
In 152 career games/3 starts, Baker boasts a 17-15 record with 70 saves and a 2.79 ERA.
The Cardinals signed the 36-year-old Burnes to a free-agent contract worth $13 million in the offseason.
Burnes was coming off a 2030 season with the Miami Marlins where he had gone 10-7 with a 3.42 ERA.
But Burnes came nowhere close to duplicating that effort in his time in the St. Louis rotation.
In 18 games/17 starts, he was 3-6 with a 6.44 ERA.
His final game, in a 9-1 loss to the Washington Nationals, Burnes served as a reliever and in 1.1 innings gave up three runs on six hits.
